However, after the Civil War, the town suffered great economic hardship and was left desolate. In 1877, Arkansas College was founded, and the Batesville Daily Guard was published. From 1862 until the 1880s, the town served as the headquarters of successive military forces in the region, including Confederate and Union forces. The town saw several Civil War events, including a battle in 1862 and an expedition in 1864. It also experienced its fair share of Ku Klux Klan resistance during the reconstruction period.
